Sarajevo’s best free things to do are Baščaršija old bazaar, the Yellow Fort and White Fortress viewpoints, the exterior of Vijećnica, the Catholic and Orthodox cathedrals, the Sarajevo Roses memorials and the tip-based daily walking tour. Together they fill a full day without a single ticket, and most sit within a 20-minute walk of each other.

Sarajevo is compact, and its layers of Ottoman, Habsburg and Yugoslav history sit side by side on the same streets. We have walked the route below many times, and it works as a one-day plan or as a free half-day before you pay for the bigger sights in our full guide to things to do in Sarajevo. Prices are approximate and current as of 2026.

1. Baščaršija and the Sebilj fountain

Baščaršija is the Ottoman bazaar at the heart of Sarajevo, a grid of cobbled lanes, mosques, coffee houses and small workshops that spreads out from the wooden Sebilj fountain on Baščaršija Square. Wandering is free. Local legend says anyone who drinks from the Sebilj will return to the city.

Nearby, Kazandžiluk Street is the coppersmiths’ street, and browsing costs nothing.

Local tip: go early in the morning, before the shops fully open and the tour groups arrive, when the lanes are quiet and the light is good for photographs.

2. Morića Han and the Bezistan

Two Ottoman trade buildings sit within a few minutes of the Sebilj, and both are free to look at. Morića Han is the oldest surviving caravanserai in Sarajevo, with a courtyard that once housed traders and their animals. The Bezistan is a vaulted 16th-century covered market, still used for trade.

Allow 20-30 minutes for both. They give context for why Sarajevo grew as a crossroads city, and they are easy to combine with Baščaršija.

3. Vijećnica (City Hall) and the Miljacka riverfront

Vijećnica is a pseudo-Moorish Revival building on the Miljacka river, built as the city hall and now a library and cultural venue. Viewing the facade and walking the riverfront is free. Exhibitions inside are ticketed at approximately 3-6 BAM.

The building is one of the most photographed in the city, and the riverbank makes a natural link between the old bazaar and the Latin Bridge, a short walk upstream. For the history behind the bridge, see our guide to Sarajevo’s war and siege history.

4. The Catholic Cathedral and the Orthodox Cathedral

The neo-Gothic Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (1887) stands on Ferhadija Street, and the Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos is a few minutes away. Both are free to enter, and together with the nearby mosques they explain why Sarajevo is often called the Jerusalem of Europe.

Dress modestly and keep voices low during services. A walk along Ferhadija Street from the cathedral to Vijećnica takes 40-60 minutes with stops.

5. The Yellow Fort (Žuta tabija)

The Yellow Fort is a hilltop bastion on the northeastern side of the city with sweeping views over the red roofs and minarets. Entry is free, and the Kovači war cemetery lies below the viewpoint.

Local tip: arrive in late afternoon and stay for sunset, when the light over the valley is at its best.

6. The White Fortress (Bijela tabija)

The White Fortress is a medieval fortification on the opposite side of the valley, and it is usually quieter than the Yellow Fort. Entry is free, and the panoramas of the city and surrounding hills are excellent.

Visit both forts on the same afternoon and you see how Sarajevo fills a narrow valley. If you plan to stay overnight, the old town is the most convenient base, and our guide to where to stay in Sarajevo compares areas, or you can check availability through Booking.com.

7. Sarajevo Roses and the free walking tour

Sarajevo Roses are concrete scars from mortar shells during the 1992-1995 siege, filled with red resin to mark where people died. You find them in pavements across the centre, and they are among the most understated memorials in Europe. Spotting them costs nothing.

To understand them, join the free walking tour from Baščaršija, which runs daily at 10:30am and 3pm. It is tip-based, and 5-10 BAM per person is typical. Guides cover Ottoman history, the 1914 assassination, religious coexistence and the siege in about 2-2.5 hours. If you prefer a private guide, browse Sarajevo tours on GetYourGuide or read our roundup of the best tours in Sarajevo.

Putting the free day together

A simple order works well:

  1. Morning: Baščaršija, Morića Han, Bezistan and a Bosnian coffee.
  2. Midday: Vijećnica, the riverfront, and the two cathedrals on Ferhadija Street.
  3. 3pm: free walking tour, looking out for Sarajevo Roses on the way.
  4. Late afternoon: Yellow Fort for sunset, White Fortress on another day.

Coffee costs only about 2-3 BAM in most cafes, so a full free day can cost less than 10 euros including food. When you are ready to pay for more, the Tunnel of Hope and Mount Trebević are the best next sights, and a day trip to Mostar or elsewhere is covered in our guide to day trips from Sarajevo. For food, see our Sarajevo food tours.

Check opening details and events on the official Sarajevo tourism board website before you go.
