Colourful buildings in a Balkan city

The inaugural Balkan Beats Bucharest festival opens today, 19 June 2026, and runs through Sunday 21 June at the Romexpo exhibition centre in Bucharest, Romania. Billed as the first international festival in Romania dedicated exclusively to contemporary Balkan music, it brings together artists from Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Romania itself across three nights of performances.

The festival is built around the electric mix of folk-rooted sounds and modern club production that defines the Balkan music scene. Beyond the main stages, the programme includes a regional food court with culinary showcases from across the Balkans, interactive fan zones and artist meet-and-greet sessions.

Bucharest sits within easy reach of several Balkans destinations we cover. Travellers already in the region for the summer can add a weekend in Romania into a broader itinerary with minimal detour. The festival makes a natural anchor around which to build a wider Balkans loop — Serbia tours from Belgrade and Sofia guided experiences are both within easy range of Bucharest. Those flying in from further afield will find Bucharest well connected via low-cost carriers from across Europe.

The event also reflects the broader momentum behind the Balkans as a summer travel region. June is one of the best months to explore the area before peak-season crowds arrive — warm temperatures, long days and a packed calendar of events make it a compelling window. Our guide to visiting the Balkans in June covers what to expect across the region this month.

We expect tickets to sell quickly for the weekend, so check the official Balkan Beats Bucharest website for availability. If you’re planning a longer trip around the festival, our 2-week Balkans itinerary shows how to combine Romania with the Western Balkans in a single overland route.
