United Airlines Launches First-Ever Nonstop Flight from the US to Split, Croatia
American travellers heading to the Dalmatian coast this summer have a new direct option: United Airlines launched nonstop service between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Split Airport (SPU) on 30 April 2026 — the first time any US carrier has flown a transatlantic route directly into Croatia’s second-largest city.
The route is seasonal, operating three times per week through early September to cover the peak Adriatic summer period. Flights use a Boeing 767-300ER, configured with both Polaris Business Class and Economy.

Why this is significant
Split is the main gateway to central Dalmatia — the hub for ferry services to Hvar, Brač, and Vis, and the city most visitors use as a base for both island-hopping and day trips to the nearby national parks. It has been growing faster than Dubrovnik in international visitor numbers, but until now had no direct transatlantic service.
Before this route existed, the fastest way from the US East Coast to Split meant a layover in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, or London, typically adding five to seven hours to the total journey time. A direct overnight from Newark removes that entirely.
For travellers planning a broader Balkans itinerary — starting in Split and moving east into Bosnia, Montenegro, or Albania — this new service offers a cleaner entry point than Dubrovnik. Our Croatia travel guide covers Split in detail, including airport transfers, ferry logistics, and the best connections onward into the region.
If you are still comparing entry points for your trip, our guide to getting to the Balkans runs through all the main Adriatic airports and the trade-offs between each.
