Montenegro marks Independence Day on 21 May, the anniversary of the 2006 referendum in which the country voted to separate from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. The date is the country’s largest national celebration of the year, and 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of that vote — making this edition bigger than most.

What is happening and where

The main public festivities take place in Podgorica, the capital. The central square hosts a free outdoor concert programme in the evening, typically featuring Balkan rock, pop, and turbofolk acts, drawing tens of thousands of locals and visitors. Smaller stages appear across the city during the day, and the riverfront area along the Morača is usually lively well into the night.

Cetinje, Montenegro’s historic royal capital located about 40 minutes’ drive from Podgorica, offers a more traditional version of the day: state ceremonies, folk performances, and a slower, more ceremonial atmosphere. It is worth timing a visit here in the late morning before heading back down for the evening concerts in Podgorica.

Kotor and the bay towns also see local celebrations, though nothing on the scale of Podgorica. If you are based on the coast and not planning to travel inland, expect a lively atmosphere in the Old Town on the evening of the 21st.

Practical notes for visitors

Transport between the coast and Podgorica fills quickly on 21 May. Buses from Budva and Kotor into the capital run more frequently that day, but advance booking is advisable if you want a guaranteed seat. Accommodation in Podgorica is limited year-round; if you plan to stay overnight for the concerts, book well ahead of arrival.

Banks and most public services are closed on the public holiday. Restaurants and bars remain open and tend to do brisk trade.
