Prizren old town with Sinan Pasha Mosque and the Bistrica River, Kosovo

Prizren is Kosovo’s most beautiful town β€” an Ottoman-era old town of stone-paved streets, 16th-century mosques, and a ruined Byzantine fortress set on the hill above the Bistrica River. Unlike Pristina (Kosovo’s capital, 80 km away), Prizren has retained the architectural character of its Ottoman past in a way that no other Kosovo city has. The old bridge, the Sinan Pasha Mosque, the Kalaja fortress, and the Bistrica River walk are all within a 20-minute area of each other.

Accommodation in Prizren is good value by regional standards β€” significantly cheaper than Dubrovnik, Kotor, or Bled for comparable quality. The old town has several boutique options; the town’s outskirts have newer hotels with spa facilities and parking.

The Main Areas

Old Town (Stari Grad)

Prizren’s old town β€” the area around the stone bridge, Sinan Pasha Mosque, and the Bistrica River β€” is where most visitors want to be. The streets are pedestrianised or have very limited vehicle access; the cafΓ©s, restaurants, and artisan workshops are concentrated here. Staying in or adjacent to the old town is the right choice for the atmosphere, particularly in the evenings when the area comes alive.

Walking distances are short: the old town can be crossed on foot in about 10 minutes, and the Kalaja Fortress is a 15-minute climb above it.

New Town and Outskirts

Prizren’s newer residential and commercial areas extend west and north of the old town. Some hotels here offer free parking, pools, and spa facilities not available in the historic centre. A taxi from outskirt hotels to the old town runs approximately €2–4.

Budget Options (Under €50/night)

Prizren is genuinely affordable by Balkans standards.

Hotel Prizreni β€” located 100 metres from the old town and 500 metres from Prizren Fortress, this is one of the most affordable options with a genuine old town location. Air-conditioned rooms with free Wi-Fi. Rates from approximately €30–50 as of 2026.

Private apartments and guesthouses β€” the old town has a number of family-run guesthouses and apartment rentals through Booking.com and Airbnb, typically in the €25–45 range. Many are in traditional stone houses with courtyard access. Read recent reviews carefully as quality varies.

Mid-Range Options (€50–110/night)

Rates from approximately €55–85 as of 2026.

Good for: Those who want an old town location at mid-range prices; cyclists; families.

The hotel has a sun terrace, restaurant, bar, and traditional courtyard atmosphere. Rooms have balconies or garden views; the restaurant serves local Kosovar and international cuisine including vegetarian and vegan options.

Rates from approximately €65–100 as of 2026.

Best-Facilitated Option (€80+/night)

It is located 1.6 km from Sinan Pasha Mosque and 2.7 km from the Albanian League museum β€” meaning a short taxi or 20-minute walk to the old town. Rates from approximately €80–130 as of 2026.

Good for: Those who want spa and fitness facilities; car travellers; guests who don’t need to be inside the old town itself.

What to Do in Prizren

Kalaja Fortress

The fortress above Prizren dates from Byzantine times, extended by the Ottomans in the 14th century. The walk up from the old town takes 15–20 minutes through stepped stone streets. The ruins are atmospheric rather than fully preserved, but the views over the old town rooftops, the Bistrica River, and the surrounding mountains are the main reward. Entry is free.

Sinan Pasha Mosque

A large 16th-century Ottoman mosque in the heart of the old town, built in 1615. One of the best-preserved mosques in Kosovo. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times; modest dress is appropriate.

Albanian League of Prizren Museum

The Prizren League was founded here in 1878 β€” a pivotal moment in Albanian national history. The museum documents the Albanian national movement from this founding moment. A short but worthwhile visit for understanding the region’s complex history.

Dokufest (August)

Prizren hosts the Dokufest international documentary and short film festival each August β€” one of the Balkans’ best film events. The old town hosts outdoor screenings, and the festival brings a lively international atmosphere to what is normally a quieter town. Accommodation fills; book ahead if visiting during Dokufest.

Prizren Old Bridge (Ura e Gurit)

The old stone bridge over the Bistrica River is the photographic centrepiece of Prizren β€” particularly at dusk when the mosque, bridge, and surrounding houses are reflected in the water. It is within the pedestrianised old town and surrounded by the best cafΓ© terraces in Prizren.

Practical Notes

  • Currency: Kosovo uses the Euro (EUR), unlike most of the Western Balkans.
  • Entry: Kosovo is recognised as an independent state by over 100 countries but not by Serbia. If you enter Kosovo from Serbia at a Serbia-controlled crossing, Serbia may not allow you to re-enter Serbia afterwards (policies have shifted β€” check current rules before your trip). Entering from North Macedonia or Albania avoids this complication entirely.
  • Taxis: Prizren’s old town is very walkable. Taxis to outskirt hotels or to Pristina are inexpensive; negotiate a price before setting off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Prizren worth visiting in Kosovo?
Prizren is arguably the most beautiful town in Kosovo and one of the most underrated destinations in the western Balkans. Its old town is an intact Ottoman-era streetscape of stone houses, mosques, and hans (caravanserais) alongside Byzantine-era churches, with a medieval fortress above and the Bistrica River running through the centre. It is easier to navigate than Pristina and has a more authentic feel. The walk from the old bridge to the fortress takes about 20 minutes and covers the best of it.
How far is Prizren from Pristina?
Approximately 80 km southwest of Pristina β€” about 1.5 hours by car or shared furgon (minibus). Regular furgons depart from Pristina's main bus station throughout the day for approximately €3–5. Taxis between the two cities run approximately €25–35. Prizren works as a day trip from Pristina but rewards an overnight stay for the evening atmosphere in the old town.
Is Kosovo safe for tourists?
Yes β€” Kosovo is generally safe for tourists, and Prizren in particular has a relaxed atmosphere with a significant Albanian population who are historically very welcoming to visitors. The main things to be aware of: inform yourself about which entry routes are valid (some Kosovo land borders are not recognised by Serbia, which matters if you intend to travel between the two countries). For most Western travellers entering via North Macedonia or Albania, there are no practical complications.
When is the best time to visit Prizren?
May to October is the most comfortable period. The Dokufest international documentary and short film festival runs in August β€” Prizren fills with international film-makers and the old town has a particularly lively atmosphere during the festival week. Spring and early autumn offer ideal temperatures and significantly fewer visitors than summer.
