Where to Stay in Zagreb: Best Areas for Visitors

Zagreb city view from Gornji Grad with Donji Grad rooftops and cathedral spires

Zagreb is a compact city and the area you stay in matters less than in a larger capital — no area is more than 30 minutes from any other by tram or taxi. That said, the choice of neighbourhood does affect the feel of your stay significantly. All prices below are approximate for a standard double room per night in 2026.

Gornji Grad (Upper Town)

Gornji Grad (Upper Town) is the historic medieval hill settlement — cobbled streets, St. Mark’s Church, the Museum of Broken Relationships, and the Lotrščak Tower. It is entirely pedestrianised within its historic core and very quiet at night once the day visitors leave.

Atmosphere: The most characterful and atmospheric area in Zagreb to be based, with genuine historic streets rather than 19th-century grid planning.

Practical reality: Accommodation options are very limited. A small number of boutique hotels, guesthouses, and apartment rentals exist in Gornji Grad, but it is not a dense hotel neighbourhood. If you find somewhere suitable here, book it — but do not rely on finding options close to departure.

Typical prices: €70–150/night for boutique guesthouses and apartments; the premium for location.

Access: No trams in Gornji Grad itself — the funicular (€0.66) connects to Ilica Street; stairs connect to Radićeva and the Lower Town. Walking up to the city market (Dolac) and Ban Jelačić Square takes around 10 minutes.

Donji Grad (Lower Town) — City Centre

Donji Grad is the Austro-Hungarian planned city below Gornji Grad: a grid of wide streets, parks, and cultural institutions. The area around Ban Jelačić Square, Tkalčićeva Street, and Ilica Street is the most practical base in Zagreb for the majority of visitors.

Atmosphere: Lively, urban, and very walkable. Trams connect you to the railway station, the bus station, and outlying areas. Dolac market is a 5-minute walk; the main café and restaurant strips are within walking distance.

Typical prices: Budget hotels from €40–60/night; mid-range hotels and apartments €60–110/night; upscale from €100–160/night.

Best for: First-time visitors, short stays, anyone prioritising walkability and access to sights and restaurants.

Near Zagreb Main Station (Glavni Kolodvor)

The area around Zagreb Main Railway Station (Glavni Kolodvor) is in the southern part of Donji Grad — well connected by tram and about 10–15 minutes on foot from Ban Jelačić Square. The station area has several mid-range and budget hotels that compete on price rather than location.

Atmosphere: Less atmospheric than the core centre — more commercial and transit-oriented. The Botanical Garden and several museums are in this area.

Typical prices: Budget hotels from €30–55/night; a slightly wider budget option than the immediate city centre.

Best for: Visitors arriving or departing by train; those who prioritise price and are happy to take a short tram journey to the centre.

Ilica Street Area

Ilica is Zagreb’s main commercial street, running west from Ban Jelačić Square through the Lower Town. The area between Ilica and the tram stop cluster has a mix of restaurants, bars, and independent shops, and the street itself provides a lively base for a few days.

Atmosphere: Busy and commercial but authentically urban — locals use Ilica for everyday shopping rather than tourist activity. The mixture of Zagreb residents and visitors gives it a more genuine city feel than the immediate tourist centre.

Typical prices: €50–90/night across hotel and apartment options.

Best for: Visitors who want to be in the middle of city life rather than specifically the tourist centre; those interested in day-to-day Zagreb.

Jarun Lake Area

Jarun Lake is a recreational lake about 5 km southwest of the city centre — used by Zagrabians for swimming, cycling, and summer nightlife. Several beach bars and clubs operate on the lake shores in summer.

Atmosphere: Completely different from the city centre — suburban and residential, oriented around outdoor recreation rather than cultural sights.

Typical prices: €40–80/night for apartments and smaller hotels; lower per-night cost than the central areas.

Best for: Summer visitors who prioritise outdoor recreation; long-stay visitors who want apartment-style living at lower cost; those with a car.

Transport: Bus connects Jarun to the city centre (20–30 minutes); no direct tram link to the old town.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area to stay in Zagreb?
Donji Grad (Lower Town) is the most practical base for most visitors — central, walkable, close to restaurants and the market, with good tram connections. Staying near Ban Jelačić Square puts you in the middle of everything.
Is it worth staying in Gornji Grad?
Gornji Grad has charm and quiet, but very few accommodation options — most hotels and apartments are in the Lower Town. If you find a property there, it is a lovely quiet base, but the choice is very limited.
Is Zagreb safe for tourists?
Zagreb is generally safe. The city centre is calm after dark and tourist-related crime is low. Use standard urban precautions in crowded areas such as the main square and the market.
