Niš is Serbia’s third city - older than Belgrade and with a historical weight that reflects its position at the crossroads of the ancient Via Militaris, the Roman road linking Constantinople to the Adriatic. Emperor Constantine the Great was born here in 272 AD, and the city has been contested, besieged, and rebuilt by Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Serbs across two millennia. Today it is a university city with a young population, a revived café culture around the Nišava riverfront, and a set of historical sites that most visitors to the Balkans overlook.

Accommodation prices in Niš are among the lowest of any significant Balkan city - Belgrade prices are typically double for equivalent properties.

The Main Areas

City Centre (Near King Milan Square)

The central area around Trg Kralja Milana (King Milan Square) and the main pedestrian zone is the most convenient base. The Niš Fortress is a 10-minute walk west; the main bus station is 10 minutes east on foot. Restaurants, cafés, and the lively evening scene around Tvrđavski most are all within this zone.

Most of Niš’s mid-range and business hotels are in or near the centre. It is a compact, walkable area.

Near Niš Fortress

The fortress area - on the west bank of the Nišava River - has a cluster of cafés and bars that are the city’s social heart on summer evenings. A few smaller boutique properties sit close to this area. It is slightly noisier at night but has the best atmosphere.

Outer Neighbourhoods

Larger hotels on the city outskirts (including some older 4-star properties from the Yugoslav era) offer larger facilities and free parking but require a taxi to reach the centre. Useful for car travellers or business visitors; less so for those focused on sightseeing.

What to Do in Niš

Niš Fortress (Tvrđava Niš)

The fortress was built by the Ottomans between 1719 and 1723 on the site of much earlier Roman and Byzantine fortifications. It sits on the northern bank of the Nišava River and contains the Bali Beg Mosque, the Baroque Stambol Gate, and a park area within its walls. Entry is free; the riverside promenade below is the city’s main social space.

Skull Tower (Ćele Kula)

Built in 1809 after the Battle of Čegar, where the Serb rebel commander Stevan Sinđelić detonated his own gunpowder magazine to prevent capture, the tower was constructed by the Ottomans using the skulls of 952 Serbian fighters as a warning to potential rebels. Approximately 58 skulls remain in place today. It is one of the most viscerally powerful historical sites in the Balkans. Located on the road out of the city toward Sofia; a 15-minute taxi from the centre. Entry approximately €3.

Mediana

A Roman imperial complex 4 km from the city centre, where Constantine the Great had a summer palace. The site has mosaic floors, baths, and a nymphaeum. Entry included in the Niš Museum ticket.

Practical Notes

  • Day trips – Felix Romuliana (Gamzigrad), a late Roman palace and mausoleum complex built by Emperor Galerius, is approximately 90 km west of Niš near Zaječar. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most undervisited Roman imperial complexes in Europe.
  • Eating out – Niš is known in Serbia for its grilled meat tradition (niška kuhinja). The city has a cluster of traditional čevabdžinica and restaurant options around the fortress area and main pedestrian zone. Prices are typically 30–40% lower than equivalent Belgrade restaurants.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Niš famous for?
Niš is Serbia's third-largest city and one of the oldest cities in the Balkans - the birthplace of Emperor Constantine the Great. Its main sights are Niš Fortress (an 18th-century Ottoman stronghold on the Nišava River), the Skull Tower (Ćele Kula), built from the skulls of Serbian rebels after the 1809 Battle of Čegar, and the Mediana archaeological site, a 4th-century Roman imperial complex. The city also has a lively café and bar scene along the Tvrđavski most (Fortress Bridge) area.
Is Niš worth a visit?
Yes. Niš is often skipped by travellers rushing between Belgrade and the south, but it rewards a day or two: the fortress is genuinely impressive, the Skull Tower is one of the most singular historical sites in Europe, and the café culture along the river is relaxed and local. It is far cheaper than Belgrade and Zagreb, and the Felix Romuliana UNESCO site is a 1.5-hour drive away.
How do I get from Belgrade to Niš?
Niš is approximately 235 km south of Belgrade, around 2.5 to 3 hours by car or direct bus. Frequent buses run from Belgrade's main bus station (BAS) throughout the day. Direct trains also operate, taking approximately 3.5-4 hours. The A1 motorway makes the drive straightforward.
What is the best area to stay in Niš?
The city centre - within walking distance of King Milan Square (Trg Kralja Milana) and the Niš Fortress - is the most convenient and best-served area for restaurants and transport. Most of Niš's better hotels cluster within a 10-15 minute walk of the fortress.
