Niš is Serbia’s third-largest city and one of the most historically dense places in the Balkans - birthplace of Constantine the Great, site of a Roman villa complex, and scene of the 1809 Battle of Čegar whose aftermath produced one of the most disturbing monuments in Europe. Core Attractions

Niš Fortress (Tvrđava): Free to enter at any time. The Ottoman fortress was built in the 18th century on the foundations of a Roman and Byzantine fortification. It occupies a prominent position beside the Nišava River and contains restaurants, a cultural complex, and an amphitheatre. The walk along the walls takes roughly 45 minutes. Summer evenings bring live concerts in the open-air stage.

Skull Tower (Ćele Kula): One of the grimest monuments in the Balkans. After the 1809 Battle of Čegar, Ottoman commander Hurshid Pasha had a tower built from the skulls of roughly 952 Serbian rebels led by Stevan Sinđelić, who detonated his own powder magazine rather than surrender. Today 58 skulls remain embedded in the outer walls. Entry approximately €2 as of 2026; takes 20–30 minutes. Located on Zoran Đinđić Boulevard, 15 minutes’ walk from the fortress.

Mediana Roman Site: Three kilometres east of the center, Mediana was a 4th-century imperial estate used by Constantine the Great. Excavated foundations, mosaics, and a small lapidary museum. Entry approximately €3 as of 2026. Combine with a taxi or bus from the center; allow 1.5 hours.

Red Cross Concentration Camp (Crveni Krst): The only preserved Nazi concentration camp in Serbia, operated 1941–1944 under Gestapo control. Exhibits document the 30,000+ people held here and the daring February 1942 mass escape. Entry approximately €3 as of 2026. Located 2 km from center, open Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–16:00.

Niška Banja: A thermal spa resort 8 km east of the city center, easily reachable by bus (line 25, approximately 30 minutes, €0.70 as of 2026) or taxi (approx €5–8). Six thermal pools, a regulated spa zone, and a village square with cafés. Day pass for pool access approximately €15 as of 2026. Several hotels in the resort offer full-board packages. Getting There

From Belgrade: Train from Belgrade Centar takes approximately 3 hours; tickets €5–8 as of 2026. Buses run every 1–2 hours from Belgrade BAS bus station; journey time approximately 2.5 hours, tickets €8–12. The bus is faster and more frequent than the train.

Niš Airport (Constantine the Great): Budget carriers including Wizz Air and Ryanair connect Niš to several Western European cities. The airport is 5 km from center; taxi to center approximately €8–12 as of 2026. Pre-booked airport transfers are available via Welcome Pickups.

From Skopje (North Macedonia): Bus approximately 3 hours, €12–18. From Sofia (Bulgaria): bus approximately 3.5 hours, €10–15.

Getting Around Niš

The city center is compact and walkable - fortress, Skull Tower, and the pedestrian zone (Obrenovićeva Street) are all within a 20-minute walk of each other. Hamam Restaurant: Situated inside the Niš Fortress, in a restored Ottoman bath building. Mains €10–18 as of 2026. Good grilled meats and local wines. Book ahead on weekends.

Moje Mesto: A popular restaurant near the fortress park serving Serbian cuisine and grilled fish. Mains €8–14 as of 2026. Reliable quality and generous portions.

Kafana Nišlijska Mehana: Traditional Serbian kafana with ćevapi, pljeskavica, sarma and rakija. Mains €7–12 as of 2026. Live folk music on weekend evenings. Central location near the Tvrđava.

Tvrđava Brewery: Craft beer taproom inside the fortress compound. A half-litre of locally brewed lager approximately €2.50–3.50 as of 2026. Food snacks available; popular from 18:00 onwards.

For burek and pastry, the pekara (bakeries) on and around Obrenovićeva charge €1–2 per portion - notably cheaper than Belgrade equivalents.

Day Trips from Niš

Sićevo Gorge: A dramatic limestone canyon 25 km east of Niš carved by the Nišava River. Train from Niš passes through the gorge - one of the most scenic rail sections in Serbia (no extra charge). Hiking trails along the rim. Drive or cycle for flexibility.

Nišava Gorge and Jelašnička Gorge: Shorter day trip, 15 km from Niš. Hiking, cliff faces, and wild swimming in summer.

Leskovac: 45 km south; known for the Leskovački roštilj (grill festival in September) and local pljeskavica variants. Bus from Niš, 45 minutes, approximately €3–4.
