The six historical sites in Albania most worth the trip are Butrint, Gjirokastër Castle, Berat Castle, Krujë and the Skanderbeg Museum, Rozafa Castle in Shkodër, and the ancient city of Apollonia. They span 2,500 years, from Greek sanctuaries to Ottoman stone towns, and entry fees stay low, mostly under €10 as of 2026.
Albania packs an unusual amount of history into a small country, and most of it is uncrowded. Below we rank the sites by how much each rewards a visit, with how to reach them and what to expect. Pair them with our Albania travel guide when you plan the route.
1. Butrint
Butrint is a Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian city layered on a forested peninsula inside a national park, 18 km south of Saranda. UNESCO listed it in 1992, and people have lived here for at least 2,500 years. The centrepiece is the theatre, built in the 3rd century BCE and expanded by the Romans, with most of its tiered seating cut into the hillside. The early 6th-century baptistery has a geometric mosaic floor in remarkable condition.
- Entry: approximately ALL 1,000 (about €10), including the cable-ferry crossing to the castle and museum
- Getting there: about 30 minutes from Saranda by taxi (approximately €15-25 each way) or by furgon for approximately €2-3
- Time needed: two to three hours
Local tip: go in the morning, when it is cooler and quieter, then continue to Ksamil for lunch and a swim. Our full guide to Butrint covers the circuit, and Saranda is the base. You can also book tours from Saranda.
2. Gjirokastër Castle and Zekate House
Gjirokastër is a stone town of slate-roofed Ottoman houses, climbing a hillside above the Drino valley. The hilltop castle holds the National Arms Museum, and a captured American spy plane stands in the courtyard. Zekate House is the finest preserved Ottoman-era mansion in Albania, with a two-storey design and bay-window reception rooms.
- Entry: castle approximately €6-8, Zekate House approximately €3, Ethnographic Museum approximately €2-3
- Open: castle daily 9am-7pm in summer
- Time needed: half a day, longer if you add the Old Bazaar
See our Gjirokastër guide for the town, where to stay in Gjirokastër for the old-town options, and guided tours of Gjirokastër, which often include the Blue Eye spring.
3. Berat Castle and the Mangalem Quarter
Berat is the UNESCO city of a thousand windows, with white Ottoman houses stacked above the Osum River. Berat Castle is a living fortress quarter, with streets, churches, a museum and restaurants inside the walls, and people still live here. Entry to the perimeter is free, and the museum costs extra.
Walk up through the Mangalem Quarter, cross the Gorica Bridge, and plan a dinner on a castle terrace. Berat is about 2.5 hours from Tirana, and it works as a day trip or a night. Read the Berat guide and where to stay in Berat, or see tours from Berat.
Local tip: May, June and September give the best light and no summer heat for the castle climb.
4. Krujë Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum
Krujë is the base of Skanderbeg’s 25-year resistance to the Ottoman Empire (1443-1468), and the castle walls date to the 5th-6th century AD. The Skanderbeg Museum inside the walls covers his campaigns through weapons, maps, armour replicas and documents. The building was designed in 1982 and is as striking as the exhibits.
- Entry: Skanderbeg Museum approximately ALL 500 (€4); Ethnographic Museum approximately ALL 200 (€1.50)
- Time needed: 45-60 minutes for the museum plus 30 minutes on the grounds
The Old Bazaar below the castle still has working craftspeople. Our guide to Krujë Castle and the Old Bazaar has the route.
Local tip: day-trippers leave around 4pm, and the town is noticeably quieter and more atmospheric after that.
5. Rozafa Castle, Shkodër
Rozafa Castle sits 130 m above the city at the confluence of the Buna, Drin and Kir rivers, and the site has been fortified since the 3rd century BC. You walk through Illyrian walls and medieval cisterns, and a small history museum sits inside. The views over three rivers and the city are the best in northern Albania.
- Entry: approximately €1.80-2.70
- Getting there: the uphill climb on foot is real, so most visitors take a taxi up
Go at sunset for the best light. Our Shkodër guide lists the rest of the city, and where to stay in Shkodër covers beds. Book tours from Shkodër for the lake and the Albanian Alps.
6. Apollonia
Apollonia is an ancient Greek city about 40 km west of Berat, with an on-site museum. Entry is approximately €5. It is the quietest of the six sites, and a natural add-on to a Berat stay if you have a car and want to pair it with a coastal drive. Our Berat guide explains the options.
How to combine the sites
The sites fall into three groups:
- South: Butrint, Gjirokastër and the Blue Eye work as a two-day loop from Saranda.
- Centre: Berat and Apollonia fit one day, and Krujë is an easy half day from Tirana.
- North: Rozafa is the anchor for a Shkodër stay before the Albanian Alps.
