Tirana to Ohrid: Bus, Border and Transfer Guide

Scenery on a day trip from Tirana in Albania

Tirana to Ohrid links Albania’s capital with one of the best lake towns in the region. The road crosses the mountains to Lake Ohrid and then the Albania to North Macedonia border, with no Schengen formalities on either side. It is slower than the map suggests, so plan on most of a travel day.

Bus Options

Direct buses between Tirana and Ohrid are run by regional operators; North Macedonian carrier information is on eurobus.mk{target=β€œ_blank”} and local agencies. Departures are limited and tend to be seasonal, so ask your hotel to confirm the day before.

The common alternative is a two-stage trip. Take a bus or furgon (minibus) from Tirana to Pogradec, around 2.5 to 3 hours and about €5 to €8, then a shared taxi or bus across the border to Ohrid, around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Compare options on Omio.

The Border Crossing

The usual crossing is QafΓ« ThanΓ« (Albania) and Kafasan (North Macedonia), near Struga, about 20 minutes’ drive from Ohrid. Queues are short outside peak summer weekends, typically 15 to 45 minutes. Neither country is in Schengen, so there are only passport checks. Our border crossings guide covers vehicle insurance and documents. Albania uses the lek and North Macedonia the denar; euros are accepted in many tourist places, but carry some local cash.

Private Transfer

A private transfer is often the easiest answer, since drivers know the road and handle the border. Expect approximately €100 to €150 for a car, as of 2026, taking about 3 to 3.5 hours. Book ahead for Tirana airport pickups, or see our Tirana airport transfer guide. Car hire is possible too, but check cross-border permission.

Making a Stop

A good stop is Pogradec on the Albanian shore of the lake, or the Struga town just across the border. Tirana tours include Berat and Elbasan options if you want to see more of Albania first, and Ohrid tours cover the monasteries and Galičica park once you arrive.

Tips

  • Leave Tirana before 09:00 to arrive in daylight.
  • Keep your passport accessible, not in the luggage hold.
  • Compare lakes: Ohrid vs Bled. For wider context see the Balkans transport guide.

Check the timetable the day before, since small operators change departures without notice. Minibuses (furgons) leave when full, so arrive early. In winter the QafΓ« ThanΓ« road can be foggy, which slows things down. Keep the euro, lek and denar mix in mind: pay small fares in the local currency where you can to avoid poor exchange rates.
