Ljubljana to Lake Bled: Bus, Train and Transfer Guide

· 3 min read Practical
Bled Island church on Lake Bled, the usual destination of the Ljubljana to Bled route

Ljubljana to Lake Bled is the easiest and most popular day trip in Slovenia: about 55 km north-west, roughly an hour by road, with buses and trains running most of the day. There is no border to cross, and the main decision is whether you take the bus, which drops you right at the lake, or the train, which is cheaper but ends a few kilometres outside the centre.

Bus from Ljubljana

Buses leave from Ljubljana’s central bus station next to the railway station and are run by operators such as Arriva/Nomago, with FlixBus on some departures. They run roughly hourly in the daytime in summer, with fewer at weekends and in winter.

Train from Ljubljana

Slovenian Railways (SŽ{target=“_blank”}) runs trains from Ljubljana to Lesce-Bled in about 45 to 60 minutes for approximately €4 to €7, as of 2026. From there a local bus or taxi covers the 4 km into Bled. The scenic Bohinj line stop, Bled Jezero, sits about 2 km from the lake but has fewer trains from Ljubljana and usually needs a change at Jesenice or Kranj. The train works best if you are comfortable with an extra connection.

Private Transfer and Tours

A private transfer takes about 55 to 70 minutes and costs roughly €80 to €120 one way, as of 2026, and can be combined with stops at Radovljica or Vintgar Gorge. You can book a private transfer ahead of time. If you prefer an all-in-one option, look at Ljubljana tours that include Bled in a half-day or full-day itinerary.

Day Trip Plan

Leave Ljubljana by 8:30 to beat the crowds. In Bled, walk or cycle the 6 km lake path, row to the island church, and climb to the castle viewpoint. Our Lake Bled guide and Bled day trips page have the details, and the Ljubljana guide covers the capital. If you are weighing lakes, compare Ohrid vs Bled.

Tips

  • In summer book return tickets early; last buses back around 21:00, check the timetable.
  • Compare the full Slovenia transport options on Omio or read our Balkans transport guide.
  • Avoid Sunday evening returns in July and August, when buses fill up.

Weekends and summer holidays are the busiest, so aim for weekday mornings. In winter the lake can be foggy and cold, but the village is far quieter and the castle often looks its best. If you plan to stay overnight, see our where to stay in Lake Bled page. Cycling or walking the lake loop takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, and the bus and train timetables are easy to reverse for the way back.
