Croatia Statehood Day 2026 — What to Know on June 25
June 25, 2026 is Croatia’s Statehood Day — Dan državnosti — a national public holiday marking the country’s Declaration of Independence from Yugoslavia on that date in 1991. It is one of Croatia’s most significant civic anniversaries and falls during peak travel season, so knowing what to expect helps you plan ahead.
What closes on June 25
Government offices, banks, post offices, and many locally-run shops will be closed across Croatia. In Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, and Pula, larger supermarkets may also shut or operate reduced hours. If you are travelling along the Dalmatian Coast, we strongly recommend stocking up on essentials — food, cash, fuel — on June 24, the day before.
Tourist infrastructure generally stays open. Restaurants, cafés, and accommodation along the coast operate normally, as this is the height of the summer season and hospitality businesses remain trading.
Ferries and transport
Jadrolinija and other ferry operators run on a public holiday timetable on June 25. Connections to the islands — Brač, Hvar, Korčula, and others — continue, but schedules may differ from the standard weekday service. Check timetables at jadrolinija.hr a day in advance and arrive at the terminal with time to spare, as demand is high in late June regardless of the holiday.
Ceremonies and events
Zagreb’s main official ceremony takes place at Ban Jelačić Square in the city centre, with flags displayed across public buildings throughout the day. Dubrovnik, Pula, and Split hold local commemorations, typically involving flag-raising, military honours, and civic events. Pula’s Roman arena — already a popular draw in summer — sometimes hosts cultural programming around the holiday period.
Travelling in Croatia this week
If you are mid-trip on the Dalmatian Coast or in Dubrovnik and Split, expect a busier atmosphere on and around the holiday. Croatians take the date seriously and the national mood is celebratory rather than solemn. It is a good day to be on the coast, not running errands.
