Lake Skadar Montenegro: Guide to the Balkans' Largest Lake
Lake Skadar guide: Virpazar, Rijeka Crnojevića, Pavlova Strana viewpoint, the national park, and how to reach both Montenegrin and Albanian shores.
Guides for Lake Skadar: Montenegro's Wetland
Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans, a shallow freshwater basin of roughly 370 square kilometres that shifts with the seasons and sits across the Montenegro-Albania border. The Montenegrin side is a national park, established in 1983, with water lilies, reed beds, island monasteries, medieval fortresses and one of Europe’s most important bird habitats. In Albania the same lake is Lake Shkodra, reached from the city of Shkodër.
It is only about an hour inland from the Adriatic coast, so it is a straightforward day trip from Budva or Kotor and a natural stop between Montenegro and northern Albania. Our things to do at Lake Skadar page covers the activities in detail; this page is the overview and planning guide.
Where to base yourself
Virpazar is the standard gateway on the Montenegrin side. It is a small village on the Crnojević River with a waterfront of boat operators, restaurants selling lake fish and local wine, and family guesthouses. Most shared boat trips start here.
Rijeka Crnojevića sits at the north-west end of the lake, on a river that winds into it. It is smaller and quieter than Virpazar, with a stone bridge, riverside restaurants and boats to the lake’s upper basin. It also gives access to the best viewpoint in the park.
Shkodër (Albania) is the base for the southern shore. It is a proper city with a castle, museums and a pedestrian centre, and the lakeside villages of Shirokë and Zogaj are close by.
The lake in four sights
- Pavlova Strana viewpoint: Above the road between Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića, a lookout shows the river carving a wide horseshoe through the marsh. It is the view on most Lake Skadar posters and is free to visit.
- Virpazar and the Crmnica wine hills: Local producers make wine from the Vranac and Kratošija grapes, and tastings are common on combined boat-and-wine trips.
- Fortresses and monasteries: Žabljak Crnojevića, Lesendro and Besac are medieval fortifications around the lake, while small island monasteries such as Beška and Kom are part of longer cruises.
- Wildlife: The park is known for pelicans, herons and cormorants, and for carp and bleak in the water. The best birdwatching is in spring and autumn.
Getting to Lake Skadar
From the coast, Virpazar is about 1 hour by car from Budva and 1 hour 15 minutes from Kotor via the Sozina tunnel. The tunnel carries a small toll (approximately €3.50 as of 2026). From Podgorica, it is about 35 minutes by road. There is also a train from Bar to Podgorica that calls at Virpazar, a scenic way to arrive if you are based in Bar.
Hire a car if you want to combine Virpazar, Rijeka Crnojevića and the Pavlova Strana viewpoint in one day, as public transport between them is limited. Alternatively, a guided Montenegro day tour often includes the lake with Cetinje or Budva.
From Albania, Shkodër is about 1.5 to 2 hours from Virpazar by road via the Hani i Hotit border crossing, depending on queues. Our Albania-Montenegro border crossing guide has the details.
When to go
April to June is green and wet, and the lilies are out; July and August bring the warmest water for swimming but also crowds and heat. September is quieter and still warm. In winter the water level rises and many boat operators cut back, but birdlife increases. Lake levels vary through the year, so some channels and beaches are seasonal.
Plan it into a wider trip
Lake Skadar fits well between the coast and the interior. Our Montenegro itinerary puts it on the route between Kotor and Ulcinj, and the Montenegro travel costs guide helps budget. For a detailed look at the lake’s southern end, see Shkodër. For the official park information, visit Montenegro National Tourism Organisation.
