Novi Sad is Serbiaβs second city β a university town on the Danube with a well-preserved Austro-Hungarian old town, a lively cafΓ© culture, and one of Europeβs most dramatically positioned fortresses. The city is relaxed and walkable in a way that Belgrade, three times larger, is not. It became European Capital of Culture in 2022 and the attention has maintained a steady flow of visitors year-round.
Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses clustered around the pedestrian zones to the showpiece Hotel Leopold I, set inside the walls of Petrovaradin Fortress with Danube views that few hotels in the region can match.
The Main Areas
Old Town (Stari Grad)
The old town radiates out from Trg Slobode (Freedom Square), Novi Sadβs main square flanked by the neo-Gothic Franciscan Church and the Serbian National Theater. The pedestrian zone along Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska streets connects it to the waterfront promenade. Most mid-range hotels cluster within this zone; restaurants and bars are steps away. It is the right base for most visitors β convenient, atmospheric, and well-served by public transport.
Petrovaradin (Across the Danube)
Petrovaradin is a separate town on the right bank of the Danube, connected by bridges to central Novi Sad. Its 18th-century fortress β one of the largest in the region β dominates the hillside. Hotel Leopold I sits within the fortress walls. The crossing takes about 5 minutes by foot or taxi from the city centre. The fortress area has its own cafΓ©s and summer outdoor events.
Liman and Other Districts
South of the old town, Liman is a quieter residential area with some apartment rentals and smaller hotels. Useful for those who want cheaper rates and free parking, and are happy to walk or take a tram (15 minutes) to the centre.
Budget Options (Under β¬50/night)
Novi Sad has a good supply of budget guesthouses and smaller hotels, particularly in the central streets behind the main square.

Hotel Leopold I
Hotel Leopold I is the most distinctive hotel in Novi Sad β set inside the walls of Petrovaradin Fortress, a Baroque-era military complex on the right bank of the Danube. The hotel occupies a beautifully restored section of the fortress, with panoramic views across the Danube to the city skyline. Rooms are elegantly decorated with period furnishings and modern bathrooms; each has Danube or courtyard views. The hotel has a restaurant serving Serbian cuisine, a terrace, a sauna, and a Jacuzzi area.
Rates from approximately β¬150β230 as of 2026, higher during EXIT festival week.
Good for: Those who want the most dramatic and historically layered hotel in the city; couples celebrating a special occasion; history and architecture enthusiasts.
Note: The hotel is on the Petrovaradin side of the river. A taxi or walk across Varadinski Bridge (5 minutes) connects it to the old town. Not walkable to city-centre restaurants without crossing.
Day Trips from Novi Sad
Petrovaradin Fortress β even if youβre not staying at Hotel Leopold I, the fortress deserves a visit. The clock tower, the underground tunnels (guided tours available), and the views from the ramparts across the Danube are all worth an hour or two. EXIT festivalβs main stages are here in July.
Sremski Karlovci β a small Baroque town 12 km south of Novi Sad, known for its wine production (Bermet wine is a local speciality), 18th-century architecture, and peaceful atmosphere. A 15-minute drive or bus ride.
FruΕ‘ka Gora Monasteries β the forested ridge of FruΕ‘ka Gora, 30 km south, has 16 Serbian Orthodox monasteries scattered across it, most built between the 14th and 18th centuries. A day trip by car or organised tour covers several monasteries with time for wine and ajvar tastings at local estates.

Practical Notes
- EXIT Festival (mid-July): Book accommodation 3β4 months ahead. Prices are 2β4x normal during festival days. Hotels across the city fill entirely.
