Bulgariaβs Kazanlak Rose Festival returns on 4-6 June 2027, when the Valley of the Roses reaches peak harvest. The festival centres on the annual Rosa damascena harvest - the flowers that have made Bulgaria one of the worldβs primary suppliers of rose oil for the perfume industry. Kazanlak has hosted organised festival events since 1903, and the 2027 edition follows the established pattern of early morning field rituals, a grand Sunday parade, folk music, and distillery visits.
The dates are fixed to the first full weekend of June each year. The 2027 edition falls 4 Friday through 6 Sunday June, with the main parade on Sunday 6 June.
The Programme in 2027
Dawn rose-picking (Saturday and Sunday mornings) takes place in the villages of Enina and Kran, just outside Kazanlak. Pickers work in traditional dress accompanied by folk musicians, harvesting petals before the heat reduces the volatile oil content. Independent access to the rose fields is limited; joining a guided group is the practical approach for most visitors. Guided Bulgaria tours from Sofia and Plovdiv are available and fill up well before the festival.
The grand parade on Sunday 6 June is the centrepiece: the rose queen, flower-covered floats, traditional horo circle dances open to crowd participation, and a procession through Kazanlakβs main streets. The parade draws large crowds; position yourself along the route early in the morning for good sightlines.
Rose distillery visits and tastings can be arranged through tour operators or independently at facilities around Kazanlak. The distillation season is brief - roughly May to early June - and a 2027 festival visit coincides with active production.
Evening concerts and bazaars continue through both Saturday and Sunday. Folk music performances vary in quality but the atmosphere at the evening markets is worth experiencing regardless.
Practical Notes
Getting there: Kazanlak is approximately 200 kilometres from Sofia and 100 kilometres from Plovdiv. Regular buses run from both cities; the journey from Sofia takes around 2.5-3 hours. A hired car or day trip from Plovdiv is the most flexible arrangement for those planning just the festival weekend.
Accommodation: Kazanlak is a small city and festival weekend accommodation fills fast - book three to four months ahead. Plovdiv (around 100 kilometres west) has a wider hotel range and makes a good base for the festival combined with several days in one of Bulgariaβs most atmospheric cities.
Weather: Early June in this part of Bulgaria is warm but variable - temperatures of 18-25Β°C are typical, with occasional afternoon rain showers. Lightweight layers and comfortable walking shoes are all thatβs needed.
Combining with a Wider Balkans Trip
Kazanlak sits on the main Sofia-Black Sea road, making it easy to combine with Plovdiv and the Rhodope Mountains to the south, or with Varna and the Bulgarian coast to the east. Our Balkans itineraries cover multi-country routes that can be adapted to include a June rose festival stop.
