DokuFest, the Balkans’ largest documentary and short-film festival, wrapped its 25th edition in Prizren, Kosovo on 15 August 2026. The eight-day programme screened more than 200 films across a dozen venues in and around the city’s Ottoman-era old town — a UNESCO World Heritage-listed ensemble of mosques, hammams, and stone houses along the Bistrica River.
A Quarter-Century of Independent Cinema
Founded in 2002 during Kosovo’s post-conflict reconstruction period, DokuFest has grown from a small local event into a BAFTA-qualifying festival with an international jury and a programme that draws filmmakers and audiences from across Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. The 25th edition placed particular emphasis on films exploring identity, displacement, and ecological change — themes that resonate with Prizren’s layered history as a city that has passed through Byzantine, Ottoman, Yugoslav, and independent Kosovan chapters.
Prizes this year included the Golden Eye Award for best international documentary and the Balkan Dox Award for films made in the region. The festival’s open-air riverside screenings along the Bistrica, which have become its signature experience, ran every evening with free admission.
Prizren as a Festival City
Prizren has positioned itself as one of the Balkans’ most accessible cultural destinations. The old town’s Sinan Pasha Mosque, the Prizren Fortress, and the Serbian Orthodox Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš can all be reached on foot within minutes of the festival’s central hub. Restaurants serving traditional Kosovan food — flija flatbread, grilled meats, tavë kosi — are concentrated in the bazaar quarter directly below the fortress.
The festival takes place during August, when temperatures in the Sar Mountains corridor reach the mid-30s. Early evening is the most comfortable time to explore the streets before screenings begin.
