Golden Eagle Balkan Explorer: 2026 Season Update

The Golden Eagle Balkan Explorer is running its updated 2026 season with a revised itinerary that adds a new overnight stop in Belgrade and extends the Adriatic leg - welcome changes for travellers who found the previous schedule too rushed through the Serbian capital.

What’s New for 2026

The most significant change is the Belgrade extension. Previous itineraries gave the city a single afternoon, which rarely felt sufficient for a capital of its scale. The 2026 routing builds in an overnight, allowing passengers to explore the Kalemegdan Fortress at dusk and take in the city’s considerable restaurant and bar scene - a growing draw in its own right.

The Adriatic component has also been deepened, with additional time allocated to the Dalmatian coast section. Departures originating in Ljubljana now incorporate a stop at Lake Bled before heading south through Zagreb and into Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Sarajevo visit remains a centrepiece of the route.

The Route in Full

The Explorer covers roughly 4,000 kilometres across eight countries over fourteen nights, with the full private train formation providing sleeping accommodation, a restaurant car, and observation carriages. Countries on the 2026 itinerary include Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro.

The train uses period-appropriate vintage carriages upgraded with modern amenities, which gives the journey a character that newer rolling stock cannot replicate. All meals are included, with wine and local spirits paired to each country’s cuisine.

Pricing and Availability

Fares for 2026 departures are priced from approximately £8,900 per person in a standard cabin to upwards of £13,000 in a suite. The route operates in both directions across the season, with departures scheduled between April and October. Several July and August departure dates have limited availability remaining.
