Lake Bohinj rewards slow days: a swim, a lakeside lunch and one proper walk. Orientation, transport and best months are in our Lake Bohinj guide; this page covers what to do once you arrive. Prices are approximate as of 2026.
Ribčev Laz: church, bridge and lake
Start at Ribčev Laz where the stone bridge and the church of St John the Baptist frame the lake. Inside the church are medieval frescoes. The pier nearby is the classic photo spot; early morning is calm and quiet. Boat and bike rentals operate here in season.
Walk the lakeshore
The path around the lake is largely flat, about 12 km for the full loop, and easy to do in sections. The northern shore is quieter; the southern shore has more spots for swimming. Allow 3 to 4 hours for the whole loop.
Savica Waterfall
From the car park near Ukanc, a stair path of several hundred steps leads to a viewing platform at the base of the roughly 78 m Savica Waterfall, a source of the Sava Bohinjka river. A small entry fee applies. Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours round trip. Wear shoes with grip; steps can be wet.
Vogel cable car and Mt Vogel
The cable car climbs from Ukanc to the Vogel ridge at roughly 1,500 m. In summer there are walks along the ridge and views toward Triglav; in winter it is a small ski area. Check conditions, as cloud can hide the view. See Vogel for timetables and tickets.
Mostnica Gorge
A short trail from Stara Fužina follows the Mostnica stream into a narrow limestone gorge with pools and a small waterfall. It is shaded, which helps on hot days. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours return.
Swimming and water sports
The lake is clear and cold, with temperatures rising to comfortable levels by July. Swimming spots at Ribčev Laz and near Ukanc have grassy banks. Kayaks, SUPs and rowboats can be rented in season; browse Lake Bohinj tours and activities for guided options.
Villages and cheese
Stara Fužina and Studor are traditional villages with wooden hayracks. Bohinj is known for Mohant cheese, a soft, aromatic local cheese, which you can try at local farms and dairies. Ask at the tourist office for current opening hours.
Hiking further into the park
For longer routes, such as the Triglav Lakes Valley, start early, check the forecast, and read the Triglav National Park safety pages. See our hiking in the Balkans guide for route-planning basics.
Combine with Bled and the coast
Bohinj is 26 km from Lake Bled, and many itineraries add Piran on the coast. Plan your overnight with where to stay at Lake Bohinj, and see the Slovenia country guide.
A simple day plan
Arrive by 9am to beat parking queues. Spend the morning at Ribčev Laz, then swim or walk the northern shore. Take lunch in a village restaurant, then drive or bus to Ukanc for Savica in the afternoon. If the weather is clear and you have time, ride the first or last cable car for Vogel’s views. In wet weather, swap in the Mostnica Gorge walk and a cheese tasting.
With children
The flat lakeshore path, the swimming spots and the Savica steps (for older children) are the main family options. The gorge walk is easy but has wet sections, so choose shoes with grip. Boat rentals are popular with families in July and August.
Seasons
Summer is for swimming and high trails. Autumn brings colour and quiet. Winter turns Vogel into a ski area and the lakeshore into a peaceful walk, though some facilities close. Spring snowmelt makes Savica and the gorge dramatic but trails higher up may stay closed into June.
