Piran’s accommodation is limited by geography: the old town sits on a narrow peninsula, so there are few big hotels and plenty of small guesthouses and apartments. Booking early for July and August is essential. Start with the Piran travel guide for transport, then compare areas below. Prices are approximate and based on Booking.com listings as of 2026.

Best areas to stay

Old town (Tartini Square and harbour). The best location for atmosphere: you step straight into restaurants, wine bars and the sunset walk to Punta. Expect stone buildings, narrow stairs, small rooms and no on-site parking. Car owners must walk from the Fornače garage with luggage.

Fiesa and the Portorož side. A 10 to 15 minute walk along the coast from the centre. Quieter, with sea access and larger hotels that usually have parking.

Portorož. Slovenia’s resort strip, 3 km away, with wider beaches, spa hotels and a casino. Good if beach days matter more than old-town charm, with regular local buses to Piran.

Guests of the old town properties often mention central position and breakfast; seafront properties are praised for sea access.

Budget and apartments

The cheapest rooms are private apartments and guesthouses, both in the old town and uphill behind it, often with a minimum stay in July and August. Hostels are rare; if you are on a tight budget, Ljubljana offers a much wider range, and Piran works as a day trip. Browse all Piran hotels and apartments for the full list.

Booking tips

  • Book 2 to 3 months ahead for July and August.
  • Check parking and the walking route from the car park before booking an old-town room.
  • Shoulder season (late May, June, September) brings warm water, lower prices and easier parking.
  • Free cancellation is common outside peak season; peak rates are more often non-refundable.
  • Tourist tax is charged per person per night on top of the room price in Slovenia.

Old town rooms: what to expect

Rooms in historic buildings can be small and may come with steep stairs, thick walls and no lift. Air conditioning is not universal, so check the listing in summer. Noise from squares and bars can carry in the evening, so ask for an upper floor or a courtyard-facing room if you are a light sleeper.

Arriving with luggage

Cars are restricted in the old town, and taxis or the local shuttle can bring bags close to Tartini Square. Ask your host for the best drop-off point and the walking route from the garage. If you are arriving by bus, the station is a short walk from the edge of the centre.

Staying in Ljubljana instead

Piran works as a long day trip from Ljubljana, 1 hour 15 minutes to 1.5 hours by car. That suits visitors on a budget, but you lose the evening and early-morning calm that make the old town special. A single night in Piran is usually the best compromise.
