The Dragačevo Assembly of Trumpeters - known universally as the Guča Trumpet Festival - is the world’s most celebrated brass music event and one of the most distinctive festivals anywhere in the Balkans. Held each August in the small village of Guča in central Serbia, the festival draws upwards of half a million visitors over four days to a settlement whose permanent population numbers in the hundreds. The event has been running annually since 1961, beginning as a local competition of Serbian folk musicians and gradually attracting international performers, media coverage, and visitors from across Europe and beyond.
What happens at Guča
The festival is built around competition: brass bands from across Serbia and the wider region compete in categories judged by a panel, with the Golden Trumpet awarded to the winning ensemble. The competition takes place on the main square in front of the central stage, but the festival spills out far beyond any official venue. Bands play in the streets, in front of restaurants and kafanas (traditional Serbian taverns), and effectively in every available public space throughout the village. The atmosphere is relentless - music continues from early afternoon through until the early hours of the morning across multiple days.
Alongside the competition, the festival incorporates a large fair, food stalls serving roasted lamb and pork, rakija (Serbian fruit brandy), beer, and grilled meats. The social and celebratory dimensions of the event are as significant as the music itself: this is a gathering that functions as part folk music competition, part village party, part major cultural event.
Practical information
Guča village is in the Dragačevo region of western Serbia, approximately 175 kilometres south of Belgrade and 30 kilometres from the town of Čačak. There is no direct train service to Guča. Most visitors arrive by bus or private car: organised bus services from Belgrade and other Serbian cities run during the festival period. Check the official website for confirmed bus schedules each year. Explore tours from Serbia for guided excursions from Belgrade.
Accommodation in and around Guča is extremely limited and books out months in advance. Many visitors camp in fields near the village, stay in private rooms with local families (arranged informally), or base themselves in Čačak or Kraljevo and drive in for the day. Search hotels in Serbia and consider options in nearby towns if Guča itself is fully booked. The festival can be visited as a day trip from Belgrade, though the experience is more immersive for those who stay overnight.
Tips for visitors
Cash is essential - most vendors in Guča operate cash only. Bring Serbian dinars in small denominations. The village is compact but extremely crowded at peak festival hours; moving between stages and food areas takes longer than the distances suggest.
The heat in August in central Serbia is significant - mid-30s Celsius during the day is typical. Stay hydrated and take breaks from the sun. The evenings cool somewhat and the atmosphere intensifies from around 8pm onwards as the competition performances conclude and informal music takes over the streets.
Exact dates for 2027 are to be confirmed - the festival typically occupies four days in mid-August. Check the official Guča website for the confirmed programme. This is one of those events that genuinely requires booking accommodation and transport far in advance.
