Dubrovnik Summer Festival

The Dubrovnik Summer Festival is one of the oldest and most respected cultural events in Southeast Europe, running for 47 days each summer across more than 20 open-air venues in and around Dubrovnik’s historic core. Since its founding in 1950, the festival has used the walled city itself as its stage, with performances set against Renaissance fortifications, baroque squares, and sea-facing terraces.

Programme and scale

Over 70 performances fill the programme across the festival’s run from mid-July to late August. The range is broad: theatre productions (including Croatian premieres and international works), classical music concerts, opera, ballet, and folk performances all feature. The outdoor venues — among them Fort Lovrijenac, the Rector’s Palace atrium, the Gradac Park amphitheatre, and several city squares — each give different performances their own character.

Fort Lovrijenac, a fortress perched on a rock outside the city walls, is one of the most spectacular theatre settings in Europe. Shakespearean productions have been a consistent feature of the festival programme at this venue.

Practical information

Tickets for individual performances sell through the festival’s official website, with popular productions often selling out weeks in advance. Prices vary considerably by programme and seating category — check the website for the confirmed 2026 schedule and pricing. A festival pass covering multiple events is sometimes available.

Dubrovnik in July and August is Croatia’s most crowded destination. Accommodation prices are at their annual peak, and the old town fills with day-trippers as well as overnight visitors. Booking accommodation two to three months ahead is the minimum realistic lead time for popular dates.

Tips for festival visitors

Many outdoor performances begin at 9pm or later to take advantage of the cooler evening air. Evenings on the Adriatic coast are warm in summer but can be breezy, so a light layer for open-air venues is worth carrying. The stone seating at some venues (particularly historic outdoor spaces) can be hard — a thin cushion is a popular practical addition.

Arriving early to any performance allows you to appreciate the venue itself before the programme begins. The walk through the old town to reach venues like Fort Lovrijenac is part of the experience.
