Dokufest is Kosovo’s most internationally recognised cultural event and one of the leading documentary and short film festivals in southeastern Europe. Held each August in Prizren - Kosovo’s Ottoman-era second city - the festival has run since 2002 and draws filmmakers, journalists, human rights advocates, and documentary enthusiasts from across the world.
Venues and atmosphere
The festival’s most memorable element is its use of the medieval Prizren Fortress as an outdoor screening venue. Films are projected against the old stone walls above the city after dark, with Prizren’s illuminated old town visible below - among the most striking viewing settings in the Balkans.
Screenings also take place at the Lumbardhi Cinema, one of the oldest surviving cinemas in the region and a cultural landmark in its own right, and at outdoor spaces along the Bistrica river running through the old bazaar. The river-side venues are relaxed and social, with bars and food stalls nearby.
Programme
Dokufest runs for eight days and covers a wide range of documentary subjects: human rights, environment, politics, arts, and social justice. Many screenings are free or very low cost; the nightly outdoor fortress screening typically charges no admission. A small number of competition films and special events require tickets, which sell through the festival website.
The festival also hosts workshops, talks, and industry events - useful for filmmakers and film students looking to connect with the documentary community in the region.
Practical information
Prizren books out well in advance during Dokufest week. Mid-range accommodation that normally runs €40–60 per night can double in price. Book by June at the latest if you plan to attend. Search hotels in Prizren early to secure reasonable options.
Prizren is around 90 minutes by bus from Pristina (departures from the main bus station near the Grand Hotel, approximately €3–4 one-way). Services run frequently through the day. The old town is compact and walkable - all main festival venues are within 15 minutes on foot.
The official website (dokufest.com) publishes the full programme in advance; following the festival on Instagram is often the most reliable way to track final schedule details and last-minute changes.
