Where to Stay Near Matka Canyon 2026: Skopje Hotel Guide

Matka Canyon has no significant hotel accommodation — the canyon is a nature reserve and day-trip destination. Your base for a Matka visit is Skopje, 25–30 minutes away by taxi.

On-site option: Dom Matka

The only accommodation at the canyon itself is Dom Matka — a small guesthouse at the canyon entrance operated by the local authorities. Facilities are basic: simple rooms, no restaurant (meals at the adjacent canyon restaurant), and limited availability. Staying at Dom Matka makes sense if you want to be at the canyon at first light — when the morning photography and early kayaking are at their best — without the taxi transfer. For a standard visit, Skopje is more comfortable and offers far more choice.

Skopje as your base

Skopje is the natural base for visiting Matka Canyon. The capital has a full range of accommodation from budget hostels to 5-star international hotels, all within easy reach of the canyon by taxi.

City Centre (around Macedonia Square)

The main tourist district: close to the Skopje Fortress, museums, and the Vardar River promenade. Highest concentration of hotels and restaurants.

Getting from Skopje to Matka Canyon

By taxi (recommended): MKD 600–800/€10–13 from central Skopje. Journey time approximately 25–30 minutes. Any Skopje taxi driver knows the canyon. Arrange a return pick-up time or book a return separately — taxis wait at the canyon for return passengers.

By rideshare: Bolt operates in Skopje and often provides cheaper fares than street taxis. Check the app for current pricing to the canyon.

By bus + walk/taxi: Bus line 60 from Skopje City Bus Station to Saraj (MKD 35–45), then 6 km to the canyon. Useful only if you want to combine a walk through the Saraj area.

• Book Skopje accommodation 2–4 weeks ahead in July and August; the capital fills with Macedonian domestic tourists in peak summer.
