Jajce is compact β€” the main sights are all within 4 km of each other β€” but the combination of urban waterfall, medieval fortifications, Yugoslavia-era history, and glacial lakes gives it more layers than a quick stop suggests.

See the Pliva Waterfall

Start here β€” the waterfall is the reason most people come and it fully delivers. The Pliva River drops 22 m over a wide limestone lip into the Vrbas River below, with the medieval citadel rising on the cliff above right.

Walk to the stone bridge directly in front of the falls β€” the classic viewpoint, about 100 m from the main square. In spring, the volume makes the mist visible from 30 m away. In summer, the flow is lower but still impressive.

Free to view; allow 20–30 minutes. Combine with a walk along the riverside path to the mills below.

Climb the Citadel

The 14th-century citadel above Jajce gives the context the waterfall alone doesn’t provide. The climb from the town centre takes 15–20 minutes via steep stone streets to the main gate. Walk the rampart walls for views over both river valleys, the waterfall, and the surrounding mountains.

  • Entry: KM 3–5 / €1.50–2.50 as of 2026
  • Duration: 45–60 minutes for a full circuit
  • Tip: The citadel is uneven and steep β€” wear closed shoes; not suitable for pushchairs

Visit the AVNOJ Museum

The building where Tito’s AVNOJ session proclaimed postwar Yugoslavia in November 1943 is preserved and open to visitors. The session hall retains its original arrangement. The surrounding museum covers the anti-fascist resistance (NOB) and the founding of socialist Yugoslavia with photographs, documents, and artefacts.

Relevant even if you’re not a Yugoslavia history enthusiast β€” the decisions made in this room shaped the entire postwar Balkans.

  • Entry: KM 3–4 / €1.50–2 as of 2026
  • Duration: 30–45 minutes

Walk the Pliva Mills

Between the Pliva lakes and the main waterfall, the river passes through a 200-m stretch where over a dozen historic wooden water mills (mlinčiΔ‡i) stand on stilts above the water. Most date to the 18th–19th centuries.

The mills path runs along the riverbank from the waterfall area upstream. Allow 20–30 minutes for the walk. Free to view from the path.

Kayak and Walk the Pliva Lakes

The Pliva lakes β€” two glacial lake basins 3–4 km above Jajce on the Pliva River β€” are the main outdoor activity area. The larger Veliko jezero stretches approximately 3 km and is surrounded by forest.

Kayak rental: Available at the lakes in summer; approximately KM 10–20/€5–10 per hour.

Swimming: The lake water is clean and swimming is popular from the grassy banks. No facilities; bring your own equipment.

Lake walk: A flat lakeside path circles the lakes. Approximately 6 km full circuit; allow 1.5–2 hours.

  • Getting there: Taxi from Jajce approximately KM 8–12/€4–6, or by car

Visit St Luke’s Church

A late medieval church in the city centre, one of the oldest functioning churches in Bosnia. Fragmented fresco remnants inside. Free entry; hours vary β€” ask locally for current opening times.

Day Trip to Travnik

Jajce’s best day trip: Travnik was the seat of the Ottoman vezirs of Bosnia for nearly 150 years and holds some of the most distinctive Islamic architecture in the country, including the Sulejmanija Mosque with its multicoloured painted exterior β€” unusual and photogenic. Also has a citadel (TvrΔ‘ava) overlooking the town.

  • Distance: approximately 40 km southeast of Jajce
  • By bus: approximately 45 minutes, KM 6–9 (€3–4.50)
  • Duration: half-day from Jajce; 1 hour covers the mosque and citadel

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time do you need for the Jajce waterfall?
20–30 minutes at the falls themselves, plus time to walk the mills path downstream. The waterfall is the starting point, not the whole visit β€” combine it with the citadel above and the Pliva lakes outside town.
Is the Jajce citadel worth climbing?
Yes β€” it's 15–20 minutes of steep climbing from the town and delivers views over both rivers, the waterfall, and the surrounding valley. The fortifications themselves are interesting and the entry fee is minimal.
Can you swim in the Pliva lakes?
Yes β€” the lakes are clean and swimming is popular from the grassy banks in summer. No facilities; bring your own towel.
Is Jajce good for a day trip from Sarajevo?
Yes, it's manageable as a long day trip by bus (3 hours each way). But staying overnight allows a more relaxed pace with time for the lakes and mills, and makes Jajce a proper stop rather than a rushed visit.
