Ksamil Beaches Guide 2026: Four Beaches, Three Islands & How to Pick

Ksamil has four main beach areas within walking distance of the village, plus three small offshore islands that are effectively beaches in their own right. The combination of white sand, turquoise water, and island-dotted views makes this the most visually striking beach area in Albania. Here is how to understand each beach and pick the right one. All prices approximate as of 2026.

Overview: why Ksamil beaches are different

Ksamil’s beach water quality is exceptional because the coastline sits within a protected marine area adjacent to Butrint National Park. The lack of significant boat traffic and the Ionian Sea’s natural clarity combine to produce visibility of 5–10 metres in normal conditions. The sand is fine and white, the water colour shifts from pale turquoise near the shore to deep blue-green further out, and the offshore islands create sheltered channels that stay calm even when the open sea has some chop.

The trade-off: popularity. Ksamil is one of the most searched beach destinations in Albania and in July–August the main beaches are crowded and expensive. The answer is to choose your beach carefully, arrive early, or visit in June or September.

Beach 1 - Island Beach (Plazhi i Ishujve)

The centrepiece of Ksamil. This beach directly faces the three offshore islands and is the most photographed location in the area. The views from the sunbeds - white sand foreground, turquoise water channel, wooded islands, hills beyond - are what put Ksamil on travel radar internationally.

Water quality: Excellent. Shallow and calm in the channel between the beach and the nearest island. Ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and paddling. The water clarity is exceptional - the sandy bottom is visible at 2–3 metres depth even when the beach is busy.

Facilities: Full beach club setup. Multiple operators with sunbeds (approximately €10–15/day for two sunbeds and umbrella in premium positions; €6–10 further back). Cocktail bars, cold drinks service, food delivery to your sunbed (light meals approximately €6–12). Changing rooms, showers.

Crowds: The most visited beach in Ksamil. In July–August, full by 10am most days. Arrive by 8am for a prime position. In June and September, much more relaxed.

The islands: The nearest island (Ishulli i Parë) is approximately 100 metres from the beach - an easy swim in calm conditions. Two boats operate as water taxis (approximately €3–5 return). The island has a small beach bar and sunbed area in season.

Best for: The classic Ksamil experience, island views, families with children, anyone who wants full facilities.

Beach 2 - Central Beach

Approximately 300 metres south of Beach 1, connected by the seafront path. Similar water quality but slightly less crowded in peak season, and with a more varied range of beach bars from budget to higher-end.

Water quality: Equivalent to Beach 1 - clear, sandy-based, calm.

Facilities: Good. Multiple beach clubs and some sections with more basic sunbed setups. Price range slightly broader - from approximately €5–8/day at simpler setups to €12–15/day at the higher-end clubs.

Crowds: Busy in peak season but slightly more manageable than Beach 1. Better for those who want a balance of facilities and atmosphere without paying peak prices.

Best for: Those who want similar quality to Beach 1 with slightly more space and value.

Beach 3 - South Beach

At the southern edge of the main Ksamil beach area. The water quality is identical but the beach has fewer large beach clubs and a more relaxed, local character.

Water quality: Very good - same Ionian clarity as the other beaches.

Facilities: More limited. A couple of smaller beach bars with sunbeds (approximately €4–8/day); no large club-style setups.

Crowds: Noticeably quieter even in July–August. This beach fills later in the day and has more space per person.

Best for: Those who find Beach 1 overwhelming; families who want calm and space; budget travellers.

Shën Gjini Beach

Approximately 5 minutes north by car from the main Ksamil village, Shën Gjini (named for a small church nearby) is a longer, more open beach with a different character from the clustered Ksamil beaches.

Water quality: Good - clean Ionian water, slightly more exposed than the sheltered Ksamil coves.

Facilities: Several beach bars and sunbed operators; approximately €5–8/day. Not as densely developed as the main Ksamil beaches.

Atmosphere: More local and relaxed. Popular with Albanian families and less visited by international tourists. A good alternative when the main beaches are at peak capacity.

Access: Short taxi or car journey; no beach-to-beach walking path.

Best for: Those wanting more space, a quieter atmosphere, and lower prices.

The three islands

The three offshore islands are a Ksamil experience in themselves:

Island 1 (nearest): Approximately 100m from Beach 1. Sandy beach, small bar in season, sunbeds. Swimmable or boat taxi (approximately €3–5 return). Gets crowded in August.

Island 2: Approximately 250m from Beach 1. Smaller, more natural. A small bar occasionally operates in peak season. Best reached by kayak or strong swimming.

Island 3 (furthest): The least visited and most natural. No permanent facilities. Ideal for those wanting a swim-to-it experience in a quieter setting.

Fourth island (Sazan is different - do not confuse): Sazan is the large military island near Vlora, far north - not visible from Ksamil.

Snorkelling guide

The best snorkelling areas by beach:

• Between Beach 1 and Island 1: Rocky reef near the island base; sea urchins, small fish, possible octopus. Visibility typically 5–10m.
• Rocky points between Beach 2 and Beach 3: Small reef fish, hermit crabs, sea grass meadows
• North of Shën Gjini: Rocky sections with good marine life

Bring your own mask and fins if possible - rental quality is inconsistent. Avoid snorkelling when boat taxis are running (10am–4pm on main beaches); early morning is best.

Free beach access: All Albanian beaches are legally public - operators cannot charge for entry to the beach itself, only for sunbeds. Small free sections exist on each beach but are very limited in peak season and rarely have shade.

Water and snacks: Beach bars on Beach 1 and Beach 2 charge tourist prices - water approximately €1.50–2, beer approximately €2.50–4, coffee approximately €2. More affordable to bring a small cooler bag from the village (supermarket water approximately €0.60).

Best time of day:

• 8–10am: calmest water, best snorkelling visibility, fewest crowds
• 10am–4pm: peak beach-club hours; most crowded and noisy
• 4–7pm: crowds thin, water still warm, good for a late swim before dinner
