Gjirokaster is a UNESCO-listed “Stone City” with 2,400 years of layered history — Ottoman, Byzantine, and Cold War all visible in a single afternoon. The city demands climbing, exploring, and eating. No flat streets; bring good shoes.

Castle and monuments

Gjirokaster Castle (€4 entry)Albania’s largest castle, towering over the Drino Valley. A mix of Byzantine, Ottoman, and communist history in one site — wander catacombs, Cold War bunkers, and the Arms Museum (€2 extra). The crashed US reconnaissance plane from the 1950s is one of the most memorable sights in Albania. Cannons overlook the slate rooftops below. Allow 1–2 hours. Open 9am–7pm summer. Cash only.

Cold War Tunnel — Hoxha’s paranoia bunker near the castle; 100 metres of dank corridors echoing communist-era dread. 20 minutes inside; bring a light. Included in the castle grounds or €2 separately.

Clock Tower — Panoramic views over the old town from the castle area; combine with the castle visit.

Old Bazaar and house museums

Old Bazaar (Pazari i Vjetër, free) — UNESCO-listed Ottoman commerce core. Zigzag lanes with copper trays, crafts, and qifqi rice ball stalls (€2–4). The most atmospheric street experience in the city.

Skenduli House (€2) — 1812 merchant mansion with kuleta towers and vaulted cellars. 30-minute guided visit. One of the best-preserved Ottoman interiors in Albania.

Zekate House (€2) — 19th-century house museum with women’s quarters and original furnishings. Near Skenduli; best visited as a pair.

Ismail Kadare Museum (€2) — Birthplace of Albania’s Nobel-nominated author. Manuscripts and photographs.

Walks and day trips

Ali Pasha Bridge hike (free, 45 min round trip) — 19th-century aqueduct survivor in Dunavat Quarter. 1km uphill from the bazaar; strong valley shots with no tourists.

Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër, approx. €5 entry) — 1 hour drive; the most popular day trip from Gjirokaster. Turquoise spring boring 50 metres deep, surrounded by forest. Taxi return trip approx. €20 for a group; organised tours approx. €30 per person.

Antigonea Archaeological Park (approx. €3) — 30-minute taxi (approx. €15). 3rd-century BC ruins atop a mountain with Ionian views. Underrated and often uncrowded.

Lekursi Castle — 45 minutes; clifftop Ottoman fort with panoramic views.
