Albanian Riviera Travel Guide 2026: Best Towns, Beaches & Where to Stay
Albanian Riviera guide 2026: Himara, Dhermi, Saranda, Ksamil — best town to base in, beaches, transport, costs, and best time to visit the Ionian coast.
Guides for Albanian Riviera Travel Guide
The Albanian Riviera is the stretch of Ionian coastline that changes most people’s impression of Albania. Clear water, pebble beaches, mountain backdrops, and a string of very different towns — from the polished atmosphere of Dhermi to the practical hub of Saranda — make this the most varied beach region in the Balkans. All prices in euros (€).
Why visit the Albanian Riviera
Clear Ionian water, affordable accommodation, a real variety of coastal character between towns, and scenery — mountain-backed cliffs dropping into turquoise coves — that most visitors underestimate before arriving. The Riviera works well for beach-only trips, coastal road trips, or as the final leg of a wider Albania itinerary.
Best towns
Himara — best all-round base
The strongest all-round choice for most first-time Riviera visitors. Proper town infrastructure, good beach access, a relaxed atmosphere, and enough restaurant choice to make evenings easy. Best for: couples, independent travellers, families wanting a balanced base.
Dhermi — best for atmosphere and upscale beach
The most dramatic coastal setting — the mountain-to-sea road descent alone is part of the experience. More beach clubs, more polished restaurants, and a slightly more resort-like feel than Himara. Better in June and September than at the height of peak season. Best for: couples, beach-club visits, polished holidays.
Saranda — best for logistics and day trips
The most practical southern hub. Promenade, broadest hotel choice, Ksamil day trips, Butrint access, and the ferry connection to Corfu. Not the quietest, but the easiest to use without a car. Best for: first-time visitors wanting convenience, multi-day bases, ferry connections.
Ksamil — best for famous beach
The most famous beach on the Albanian coast — clear water, offshore islands, the most-photographed shoreline. Also the most crowded in peak season. Best used as a day trip from Saranda or for 2–3 nights if beach is the priority. Best for: beach days, Instagram-style swimming spots.
Vlore — best northern gateway
Larger, more urban, less resort-like. Useful as a coastal starting point if coming from Tirana or Berat before moving further south.
Best beaches
- Ksamil Islands beach — the most famous; crowded in peak season
- Beach of Mirrors — one of the most discussed southern swimming spots
- Gjipe Beach — dramatic setting, more remote feel
- Jale Beach — easy beach day with social atmosphere
- Livadhi Beach (near Himara) — broad, accessible, best all-round beach near the best base
Getting there
- From Tirana: Bus is cheapest but slow; car is most flexible for the coast itself
- From Saranda: Ferry from Corfu (Greece) — a useful open-jaw route
- Driving: Most useful for moving between Himara, Dhermi, Ksamil, and remote coves

The Riviera is more expensive than inland Albania in July–August — expect to pay roughly 30–50% more than in Tirana for comparable accommodation. Shoulder season (June, September) is significantly cheaper and better for most visitors.
Best time to visit
- June: Best all-round — warm, sea temperature rising, before peak crowds
- September: Second best — summer heat drops, fewer visitors, sea still warm
- July–August: Best beach weather; most crowded and expensive
- October: Quiet, cheaper; sea cooling but still pleasant
Suggested structures
3 nights: One base (Himara or Saranda), beach days, one nearby beach variation
5 nights: Day trip to Ksamil or Butrint, split between Himara and Dhermi
7 nights: Full coastal route Vlore or Dhermi → Himara → Saranda
